M.A.D. MAIL ART DAY by Ruggero Maggi
MAM Museum of Modern Art and Mail Art
16 October 2024 – 10 January 2025
Montecarotto, Italy.
On the occasion of the M.A.D. Mail Art Day 2024 project, two events will be held at MAM Museum of Modern Art and Mail Art in Montecarotto (AN) and at Musinf Museum of Information in Senigallia, curated respectively by Ruggero Maggi and Stefano Schiavoni.
Wednesday 16 October at 18.00, M.A.D. Mail Art Day 2024 will be inaugurated at the MAM in Montecarotto with the presence of the Mayor Giuseppe Paoloni, the Councilor for Culture Silvia Pieralisi, the Director of MAM e curator Stefano Schiavoni and the artist Ruggero Maggi.
The MAM Museum of Modern Art and Mail Art of Montecarotto has been active since 1984. This museum was conceived and founded by Carlo Emanuele Bugatti with the Municipal Administration of Montecarotto, within an unprecedented project of a Widespread Museum on the territory of the then Provincial Authority of Ancona. In fact, the Museum collaborates historically and permanently with the MUSINF of Senigallia inaugurated in 1981, with the Nori dè Nobili Municipal Museum of Tre Castelli and with various other museums in the Marche region and in all the national territory.
The M.A.D. Mail Art Day project | October 16 | International Mail Art Day was launched at the end of 2022 by Ruggero Maggi to remember Ray Johnson, born on October 16 and defined as “the most famous unknown artist in New York”. By founding the New York Correspondence School in 1962, with which he mocked the various correspondence art schools that were springing up in the US at the time, he marked with this explosive initial moment, the Big Bang of Mail Art.
The event gathers some projects curated by Ruggero Maggi during 2024 by this date
- “MAIL ART, ART IN TRENCH” Mail Art meeting held on May 8th in Venice at the Spazio Thetis. Speakers: Chuck Welch (aka CrackerJack Kid) American mailartist, Willie Marlowe American verbovisual artist, Antonietta Grandesso Manager of Spazio Thetis, Piergiorgio Baroldi President of the Cultural Association Paolo Rizzi ETS, Stefano Schiavoni Director of the MAM Museum of Modern Art and Mail Art of Montecarotto (AN ) and the artist Ruggero Maggi. The event was dedicated to Giorgio Nelva and BuZ Blurr (Russell Butler), who recently left us. At the MAM will also be shown a video realized during the meeting by Eloise Sherrid and Lauryn Welch.
- “MAIL ART POETRY – POETRY IS RESISTANCE” Arte Correo collateral project to the first international biennial of Argentine experimental poetry POSVERSO, strongly desired by Silvio De Gracia, who has expanded the experimental research in more multidisciplinary fields, involving artists from all over the world with a branched and articulated diffusion of culture and of LIVE ART in Buenos Aires and Argentina. Poetry and resistance, war and poetry, one has been trying for centuries to annihilate the other with oppression, with violence, but Poetry is difficult to defeat. It will always find a way to emerge in the most unexpected places, in the subways of a bombed London, in the tunnels of underground cities, in muddy trenches. The trench is an emblem of defense, but also a line from which an attack can start… the attack of Poetry towards a world that seems to have forgotten it, seems to have made it obsolete, but poets and artists have always been on the front line to fight with pens and pencils the insane desire of violence. Mail Art represents one of the most powerful and deflagrating poetic weapons to make one’s “voice” heard.
- UTSANGA Visual poetry and mail art have always been inseparable companions on the road. Poetry: food of life… poetic chrysalis of mail art, exercise of creative freedom and restlessness of the soul with which to plough through the entire world. This mail art project curated by Francesco Aprile, Vincenzo Lagalla and Ruggero Maggi wants to celebrate 10 years of work and research by Utsanga, through some exhibition moments in different locations, with the participation of hundreds of international artists. Utsanga.it is an online magazine about liminal analysis. The term “utsanga” is a Sanskrit word that meaning “womb, embrace”. The magazine was founded by Francesco Aprile and Cristiano Caggiula in 2014. Border that preludes the beyond, line that expands becoming a conceptual laboratory, a research center, an archive.
- OIMA International Organization of Mailartists, international project for a reduced rate for mail art. The international organization of mailartists – symbolically created on September 13, 2023 by Maya Lopez Muro of the art studio Il Graffiacielo|Italy, César Reglero Camposof Taller del Sol|Spain and Ruggero Maggi of the Amazon Archive|Italy – has invited mailartists from all the world to participate to the international call of the project “for a reduced rate for mail art”. The organizers’ goal is to reach the general management of the Post with their appeal, since the high shipping costs are substantially affecting the communication activity of the entire mail art world.
- SAVE ARTPOOL Unfortunately even in mail art negative forces sometimes act such as the situation, to use a euphemism, disagreeable in which two great Hungarian networkers Julia Klaniczay and György Galántai found themselves. Today, the Museum of Fine Arts would like to conserve Artpool’s huge collection, but it does not respect the commitments made in the 2014 Donation Agreement and would like to exclude Artpool’s creators and founders of Artpool from the Artpool Art Research Centre they themselves created. Some time ago I wrote a letter to the General Director of that Museum without receiving any response and therefore I thought of launching an open appeal to the entire art community.

“ME AND RUGGERO MAGGI – GAC” by Stefano Schiavoni
MUSINF Sala Bugatti, Senigalli, Italy.
17 October – 17 November 2024
Always in context of M.A.D. Mail Art Day at the Musinf Sala Bugatti in Senigallia, will be presented by Stefano Schiavoni the exhibition “Me and Ruggero Maggi – GAC” with works by the two Italian mailartists, linked by a deep friendship. This new exhibition project re-proposes and consolidates a proven collaboration while maintaining a relationship to be developed operationally in the near future, through the collaboration between the two museum institutions with the exhibition of a selection of works by the main international protagonists of Mail Art present in the Senigallia archive of the Musinf and the centrality of the project M.A.D. Mail Art Day 2024. The video with a brief history of mail art realized by Ruggero Maggi in 2021 for Il Tavolo dei “postali” organized by Fabio Bonacina, the Unione Stampa Filatelica Italiana, the online newspaper Vaccari News, the Institute of Italian Historical Studies “Aldo Cecchi” and the Historical Museum of Communication will also be presented.
